Temagami Wilderness Adventures

If you are a hunter, fisherman, backpacker or an outdoor enthusiast that does or may want to spend time a lot of time in the bush. Navigation is crucial to your safe return home and with the technology we have available today like GPS units then getting lost shouldn’t happen, but it does. Why do people with compasses and these units still get lost because they don’t know how to use them correctly? You may be a professional involved in community response services or working in the natural resources and tourism industry or may just need to take a course for insurance purposes. For many reasons, there are many people that could benefit from the skills, certification and accreditation of this course which is being sought after in today’s workforce.

This is a one day training session where the morning is spent on map and compass skills and how to interpret that information. Once you have acquired these new skills it will be put to practical use in the field which is where you will realize the most important aspect, the relationship between the map and the GPS unit - the coordinates on both. You will understand the basic concept of direction, moving from a starting point to a destination using the compass, the map and the GPS unit as one. You will be able to find the Navigation setting, enter map datum setting WGS 84 or NAD 27, enter UTM or LAT/LONG coordinates systems settings, read position or navigation page, mark a way point and identify the easting/northing - lat/long coordinates, save your way point and retrieve it. You will be able to use the GOTO function and find another location with your GPS unit, plot routes, record and back track your previous track.

At the end of the day you will be given a short competency test on everything that had been covered over the course of the day and if you achieve a score 80% or above you will receive your certificate and become a certified GPS card holder for a period of three years. This newly acquired skill will open up a whole new world to outdoor fun that’s becoming popular around the world in a activity called “geocaching” or take part in a activity right here in Northern Ontario called ( NOGPSTH) Northern Ontario GPS Treasure Hunt which is a little different than geocaching, but just as much fun.

These sessions will start May 1 and may be held in North Bay at Canadore College Trails, Marten River Provincial Park or in Temagami at Temagami Wilderness Adventures which could be included in an overnight canoe trip to really put your newly acquired GPS skills to the test. The one day course is $75 and the overnight canoe trip is an additional $150 which includes meals and all equipment. You are to bring a sleeping bag, rain gear and any personal items needed. Your own GPS is a good idea for the course because each unit varies, but you can apply what has been learned to any unit. In fact this course will help you understand the owner’s manual to any unit now. It is good to learn on your own unit though so if you are interested in the course and willing to invest your time and money then invest in your own GPS unit too, there could be units available upon request. Please start booking your sessions as soon as possible as there are other canoe and camping trips for various lengths of time that I am involved in as you can index from the main page. Please feel free to contact Steve at home and book your session now.

Global Positioning Satellite Navigation Solutions

Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) offers the latest method in high accuracy navigation by using a constellation of 24 satellites orbiting the earth and transmitting microwave band radio frequencies across the globe. GPS receivers capture at least 4 of the satellite transmissions and use difference in signal arrival times to triangulate the receiver's location. This location information is provided in the classic latitude (north-south) and longitude (east-west) coordinates given in degrees, minutes and seconds. Without a compass, GPS receivers must collect several sets of coordinates, or waypoints, and then determine a general sense of direction of travel. By complementing GPS receivers with electronic compasses, more precise and instantaneous headings are provided to aid navigation for air, ground, and water-based systems. Electronic map displays can be quickly updated when combining electronic compass bearings with GPS receiver derived location coordinates. Should GPS signals become blocked due to obstructions or severe weather, the compass updates and system speed information can provide a temporary backup in navigation.
